Question: What do you do if you've got a passion for high-performance cars and want a limited edition luxury sports watch that lets you wear your heart on your wrist?
Answer: you wear a Hublot .
Formula 1 and luxury watches have enjoyed a dream relationship for years. Ever since Audemars Piguet invented the concept of the luxury sports watch in the 1960s, watchmakers have been coming up with ever more sophisticated and creative designs, often inspired by the almost superhuman feats of legendary F1 drivers. And famous F1 associations have come thick and fast. In the late 80s and early 90s, Ayrton Senna and TAG Heuer were the ultimate racing dream team. Fast forward to 2014, and Mercedes sponsor IWC Schaffhausen allowed drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg to design elements of their very own special edition watches.
In 2010, Swiss manufacturer Hublot was given the enviable position of official Formula 1 watchmaker. They released a number of F1 watches, including the F1 King Power SILVERSTONE.
Designed to stand out in the pit lanes and director's boxes of Britain's F1 Grand Prix course, this stunning chronograph is a rare connoisseur piece. There are only 250 in circulation, and each one is numbered. At 48 mm, it's wider than most men's timepieces, but it needs to be. When you're as big and bold as the personalities on the track, you want a watch that stands out. And you want a watch that lets you see everything on its face at a split-second glance, even when you're travelling at high speeds on a track day. Such as the 48-hour power reserve sub-dial, the small seconds, or the 30-minute chrono counter.
The distinctive design is eye-catching, timeless and exclusive. It doesn't scream F1; that would be too crude. After all, being bold doesn't mean you also have to be tasteless. The Hublot F1 King Power Silverstone simply evokes the spirit of F1 via a clever and subtle blend of colour, materials, and innovative features. The strap of this luxury timepiece is jet-black leather with a crocodile effect, set off by stitching in poppy red. It has a rose gold deployant buckle. The case is made from Hublot's 18K King Gold, a blend of gold, copper and platinum. The design of the bespoke carbon fiber and ceramic bezel of the F1 King Power Silverstone is inspired by a brake disc on a high-performance car. The perforations on the bezel are reminiscent of chevrons. A satin finish is the icing on the cake, or the magnum of champagne on the podium if you will.
Scratch-resistant sapphire glass protects a black and grey dial. It's multi-layered to create depth. It's got semi-skeleton 18K rose gold hour and minute markers, and semi-skeleton stick hour markers with tips in the same red as the stitching on the strap. There are chronograph 'Start' and 'Reset' push pieces on the side, above and below the crown.
As for performance? Well, the clue is in the name. You'd expect a luxury watch with a name such as the F1 King Power Silverstone to be in a league of its own on the performance front. It doesn't disappoint. Timing is everything in F1. Water-resistant to 100 m, this luxury sports watch has an automatic movement. Nothing unusual about that. What is unusual is the tungsten carbide oscillating weight and 27 jewels that feature within the movement. Precision and beauty lie at the heart of this luxury watch as well as on its outside. No wonder it's such a sought-after model.
